:?: Just as a matter of interested and with all this talk of P1s going bang, I thought I'd find out if it was possible to get hold of a second hand engine !!
Got a reply straight away from the first broker I contacted and he said the one i have is an sti version 6 v-limited which use the exact same engine, this is for the engine only

Is this correct ?

No

The P1 engine is based on the sti 5 which is stripped down and rebuilt using prodrives forged pistons.

No other subaru made has the same engine as the P1

kp,

Where'd you get the info about the pistons etc? Interesting as forged pistons are supposed to have greater tolerances than cast. Does this mean that WE can still get piston slap but no other MY99/MY00 car is likely to? :x

It's not the piston's fault if it melts. It melts due to lean mixture and det. Blame the MAF, fuel pump or your mods if this happens.

Forged pistons are supposed to be stronger and take more revs before letting go. Modern cast pistons can have a better fit or more closely controlled tolerances though.

Its the same as an STI 5 can't imagine prodrive removeing and rebuilding 1000 engines before selling the P1.

So whats the score - are they just Sti V engines or have they been fettled?
I thought the ecu etc was different ,as is the suspension but thought the engine was totally stock jap STi V.
Who knows !!! My subaru dealer doesnt know!

I think a couple of points need clearing up here.

Firstly there is no evidence to indicate that a lot of P1 engines are going bang. This sort of talk is speculation and as such is going to give the P1 a bad name.

Secondly IIRC, the mods done to the standard car were, springs, increased knock detecton, possibly a broquet in the tank, passenger airbag, abs and the cosmetics such as wings, spoilers and interior seats. I have never heard anything regarding pistons being changed and doubt this very much. I stand to be corrected if anyone has any evidence to back this up.

Sorry if this comes over a bit abrupt but personally I am getting fed up with the increasing trend to knock the P1 and blame IM/Prodrive for engine blows. How many of these engine blows are to standard cars? We don't know and how many have gone bang out of the 1000 made? Again we don't know.

Regarding the P1 engine, I have had it confirmed that it is identical to the STI Version 5 which has STI forged pistons.

I read your post on scoobynet about this and sure enough, the reply was, STI forged pistons
