PICKLE

Well, after a successful mapping session with Bob Rawle yesterday, my car is finally how I want it! :D
It has taken the best part of a year to get it finished, due to unseen problems/faulty parts/Bob being too bloody busy all the time :D etc.. but has been worth it in the end.
Basically I have had the car for a little over 3 years, and have taken it from completely standard to as it is now.
Costs?? Who knows, don't care, and don't really want to think about it!
I started off with a Full de-cat (from my previous car MY98 UK 4dr) and K+N filter. Ran around like that for around a year
Knowing what I do now, I was very lucky for it not to go bang.
I bit the bullet, and had an ECUTEK TEK3 Re-map by BRD to make the car safe.
Visited Powerstation in Cheltenham for a rolling road day, and recorded 306.5BHP/262FT/LB on their notoriously low reading rollers. (2nd highest Impreza on the day IIRC)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/PowerS1.jpg
Clutch started to slip after the re-map, so an AP Racing Organic Kit was fitted soon after.
Next came a full Gruppe-S manifold and up-pipe, which was wrapped and fitted, along with a Walbro 255 Fuel Pump/FSE Regulator then back to BRD for a map tweak.
Result: 314.5BHP/268FT/LB again at Powerstation. I was bitterly disappointed with this result, and that was the catalyst to take the car to the next stage!! :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/PowerS2.jpg
This consisted of a set of 550cc Denso Injectors, A Brand New Turbo Dynamics built Hybrid Turbo TMI 141S (which is basically the same as the TD05/06 20G turbo's that are so popular nowadays).
I also had a custom made Inlet pipe done, to replace the crappy plastic OE one. I also removed the inlet manifold, and re-painted that, fitted Turbo/Injectors/Inlet pipe, & I also fitted a Catch Tank.
I then refitted all back to the car in the January Snow of 2004! (bloody freezing!)
Also added a Larger Bonnet scoop from DRMotorsport, to feed the TMIC better, along with modifying the Headlight washers, to use with a pressure switch, and act as an IC water spray.
TURBO:

550's
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00361.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/P1withTMIC.jpg
Had another re-map by BRD to suit. I was very happy with the car at this point, as the bigger turbo made all the right noises, and gave the car so much extra oomph.
Off the G-Force rollers this time as part of the RB5OC rolling road day.
Result : 347.8BHP/300FT/LB :D (2nd highest car on the day again, only below a RCM built STI 5 will all the bells + whistles!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/P14KLEonG-ForceRollers.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/G-Forcegraph.jpg
That result was still on the OE TMIC, and the car was suffering abit from the extra heat built up from the bigger turbo, so being a rare car, and not wanting to spoil it too much I was determined NOT to fit a FMIC and hack the bumper up!
At this time, I was approched by Peter @ SPEC-R alloy fabrications and asked whether I would like to be their show car to show off their products for the Classic shape Impreza's. I tried an Uprated TMIC that was made of alloy (matched all their gear  ) BUT, this wasn't really any improvement over the OE STI5 type IC that is fitted as standard!.
This was again highlighted when I revisited BRD to map for it!
PIC SHOWING UPRATED TMIC :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/TMIntercooler.jpg
I got a little bit disheartened at this point, although the car was lovely to drive in this Spec. I finally bit the bullet, and decided FMIC was the only way to go, but being a tight git, I put my name down on Harvey's group buy for a Hybrid FMIC kit.
As the kit arrived on my doorstep, a fellow Scoobynetter approached me and asked if I wanted his old FMIC kit!! (Bloody Typical)
This was Alan Garrod, who some of you may recognize as having run his UK car @ 400bhp+ with this FMIC kit fitted. I bought the kit from him (Hyperflow FMIC) and so, then I had 2X FMIC's at one time!
Luckily, sold the Hybrid on for what I paid, (Loverly looking kit BTW, but the Hyperflow was proven, and easier to fit), so I started to scour Flea-Bay for a P1 Splitter to fit to the bumper Alan gave me with the kit.
Luckily, found a complete P1 front bumper on there, and got that to hack up instead! :D
HYPERFLOW KIT :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00341.jpg
Fitted the FMIC which TBH isn't as bad as it seems, took me a Fri afternoon/eve, and was fitted ready for the Rallyday show @ Castle Combe the next day!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/P14KLERallyday.jpg
Back to BRD for re-map, and the this was the start of loadsa little niggling probs that I have just got over!!
Basically, the FSE Reg stared to play up, so that was replaced with an SX Reg, also the 550cc Injectors were maxing out, so again these were replaced with 740cc Tomei versions. In between all this I reckon i must have been back to BRD 2-3 more times, and each time something little caused us trouble, and the last little problem was the Boost Creep at the top end of the rev range!
For this, I had to remove the Turbo from the car, and 'Port' out the Wastegate hole by 1-1.5mm to cure it. I removed the turbo on the Saturday afternoon after returning from BRD, and by Sunday evening, the Turbo was done, and fitted back on the car!! :D (I'm getting a dab hand at all this Impreza fiddling lark. I am available for hire! LOL :D )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00371.jpg
Also, the Fuel Pump was deemed to be a little 'weak' as it had been running at high FPR on the 550's, so this was replaced too!.
Finally back to Bob yesterday, and we have got the result we have been chasing all year!! A nice clean/safe map running a max of 76% Injector Duty, with No lean spots, No Detenation, and running a max of 1.5bar Boost. The car absolutely flies, and although there are many cars (P1's included) with alot more BHP etc, it really does make for a Very quick point to point road car, that is still very useable around town etc...
I thought I would post this thread up as it may be useful/helpful to others, as there seems to be a huge interest in going down this route of tuning lately, as the Warantee's of most cars are coming to an end, and the parts are becoming more readily available.
FINISHED:

I am due to visit Power Engineering on Feb 19th as part of the Hampshire Scoobies Rolling Road day, so I will add the results/graph up then.
Can't wait, although the figures will mean nothing in reality, as I know I have all the right components, and have had the car mapped by the best in the business IMHO, so it is as good as it can be at the mo! :D
Thanks for taking the time to read this long (boring maybe?) thread.

Competition!! What's that??
I'm not there to be the highest BHP etc Terry, just using the day as a way of judging how the final mods have affected the car's output! :D
I know there are plenty of other cars out there putting out bigger figures than me, but I have just done what i would think is the limit for the 'average' persons wants/needs (ie, not going internal etc...)
Thought I'd post this up to help others, as I know that I couldn't have done all this without help from people who have done the same sort of things. There's too much secrecy in the Subaru tuning world IMHO :?
Being realistic, 370bhp and 320ftlb would be nice 8)

Pickle, engine bay looks cool, as ever, but what does the airbox cover do?
Does it channel the air in from the same place as the OEM air box? If so, I assume it's more effective than the bonnet scoop otherwise you wouldn't have bothered with the hassle of installing it?
PICKLE
Sat 29-01-2005, 04:04 PM
Mark, I really am starting to worry about you! :D
If you look behind the headlight, the lid of the box is bent up slightly. This then seats against the bonnet when down, and air is drawn in over the headlight and into the box. Also have a feed plumbed in from the wedge below the indicator which feeds the box also.
Have removed the scoop in vent as it is no longer needed. :)
The idea is to contain the air for the filter in a cooler environment than the rest of the engine bay etc..

Another little cosmetic update! :D
I was desperate to fit some Gas Powered Bonnet lifting struts since fitting the Airbox, as the OE bonnet stay used to catch on the lid of the box when putting the bonnet up!! :(
I never imagined this little addition would be so much of a hassle/brain wrencher
I looked around worldwide to find a kit to fit the GC8 classic shaped Impreza's, but none could be found :(
Everyone seems to be catering for the New-age cars now, and there were a couple of different kits available for these in the U.S.A. Contacted these companies, and none could help me out!.
Next approach was to contact 2 people that I found out had fitted some to their classics, but again, the info was sparce (although I did manage to get a couple of photo's)
I bought a kit for the MK3 Golf thinking I maybe able to adapt the kit to fit my car. This was a bad choice of kit I feel, as the struts were a litlle too long, and the mounts were unsuitable for the car!.
I had to get the 2X threaded ball joint mounts taken down from an M8 thread to a M6 thread. This would allow them to be screwed into the OE wing fixing. The other balljoint was a Self tapper type thread, which again I had to cut down, and modify the thread to take an M6 nut.
I then had to cut the struts down by 15mm, and re-thread the ends.
After a couple of mistakes (read : hole drilled in the wrong place! :P ) I managed to fit them to the car! :D :D
This has enabled me to remove the OE stay, and thus not catch on the Airbox lid :)
Bonnet opens a little higher than Normal, but this is good as it allows more room to work, plus more light is let in to enable me to see when I drop bloody nuts/bolts down there! :D
Pics as follows:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00378.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/bonnetstrut.jpg
With regards to the group buy that Money may organize, I would go with what ever he can come up with, as this kit I bought was a Nightmare to be honest!. I may yet upgrade them to a better suited kit when it can be found!
Cheers,
James 8)

Honestly Mark, it was a real pig of a job! If you had the right kit for the car it could be done in about 10-15mins tops, but I had to do all the guesswork regarding the right angles/lengths of the struts etc......
There honestly isn't really anymore I can do without going absolutely stupid on the motor
It runs OK, so no point disturbing it, and if it does I have to decide whether to put a 2.5l in, and run the same set-up but with a little LESS boost, and have a nice torquey 400/400 car, OR go the RCM 2.0l with diesel liners/uprated pistons/rods/crank etc....
Actually, thinking of it, I've just answered my own Ques there :D

Well, a disappointing day at Power Engineering yesterday!!
Went down there as part of a day organized by TerryB (Very well organized I must add too :D ) basically to run the car to see what difference the latest mods/mapping have made to the car.
My how I was gutted
Firstly, I want to explain my theory for the poor result, ( I said explain and not make an excuse LOL  )
The car had just been driven 120 odd miles, and was virtually straight on the rollers. The bonnet was never lifted at all, which meant the engine bay was Very hot ( I have the vents blanked off still)
The car was left idling on the rollers for a matter of 5mins or so before the run.
The run began, I was sat in passenger seat, to keep an eye on things, and I noticed the car peaked out at 1.3bar! (Easily holds 1.45-1.5bar on the road). Next 2 runs resulted in the same!
The result: 355bhp and 298ft/lb
That is less torque than last time when I still had 550cc injectors, and the OE TMIC  Gained 7bhp though!
Graph
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/PowerEngineeringgraph2.jpg
I will now be attending another RR day in April @ WRC Technologies in Silverstone to see whether this result was a phony or not!
Results can be found here : http://www.hampshiresubaru.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=599

Surprised at that result.
Mine car was put on the rollers in a similar condition to yours and produced a really good result.
Better luck for the next rr chap

what was your intake charge temperature pickle? did you notice mate.
i say this cos when hairballs car was on the RR in leicester, his was running high and it killed it stone dead.
:? :?
PICKLE
Sun 20-02-2005, 11:08 PM
Charge temp was OK Mark. It was around 16-17'C IIRC whilst running on boost. It was the load on the rollers which wasn't enough IMHO as it only hit 1.3bar max, whereas on the road it HOLDS 1.45bar all day long :D
There were a number of disappointed runners there yesterday! Another 400bhp potential car only made 340 something, and a 450+bhp car struggled to make 430bhp too.
Will put it down to experience, as I know that the car has more than what is shown above, just needs to be proven! :D
Dave
Mon 21-02-2005, 03:45 PM
Pickle,
What do you mean by the load on the rollers?
marky mark
Mon 21-02-2005, 04:00 PM
rolling roads. really useful but sometimes not all that.
these are a comparitive tool and nothing else. awful lot of rubbish about bhp and torque figures are banded about but a lot of it should be taken with a pinch of salt.
I have spent literally days setting up carburation / injection / ignition and messing around with exhausts and intake mods on my own and others race bikes, and the one thing you soon learn is you can get a big variation from day to day (even with corrected figures for different temps and air densitys etc)
I have witnessed on one of my own bikes 128 bhp one evening and 114 the next morning (corrected).
the real use of them is for set up and testing purposes i.e do a run. make a change, do another run.
Also at work, we have dumped all of our rolling road dynos and only use engine dynos, where the lump drives the dyno directly by chain.
with the RR's there was just to much variation, for example 3 or 4 psi difference in tyre pressure can make a appreciable difference in power and torque.
i wouldnt loose sleep over it pickle. if the car feels fit, and your **** dyno tells you its improved, then you can be sure it has.
Jazz
Mon 21-02-2005, 04:15 PM
James I wouldn't pay to much head to the result, with you only holding 1.3bar it doesn't reflect the cars true performance. It also highlights why Bob does all his mapping on the road & not the rollers.
marky mark
Mon 21-02-2005, 04:31 PM
Pickle,
What do you mean by the load on the rollers?
dave, the rollers have a brake on them or otherwise the car would just rev up to quickly, i.e it would not be under load.
the force that this brake puts onto the rollers should be the same from day to day but is not always the case. when they calibrate the dyno, all they do is check / adjust that this force or load is correct.
so if the brake is loading up the rollers a bit to heavily, you get low results.
what pickle is saying, the load on the rollers was low, the engine was revving to quick, therefore it was not allowing the turbo to spool up and create boost as it would do under normal driving conditions.
Dave

Feel a little bit better after getting an E-mail back from Bob Rawle. :)
I scanned the graph, and sent it with a description of what happened Saturday and he replied with
: "HI, curve shapes are excellent and it pulls all the way up, I do think the figures a bit low I must say, you weren't the only one who seemed to be down btw. Given it ran nearly 0.2 bar less boost then you lost circa 24 bhp over what it should be doing which would put it where it should be, torque suffered as they didn't load the car to spool properly."
I know some people will say that as he mapped the car, he is bound to say something like that, but those of you who know Bob, will know he is being honest!
So, in his eyes 355bhp + the lost 24odd bhp = 379bhp :D
Not quite the elusive 400bhp, but good enough for me, especially with a margin of safety included in that. :)
Dave

I dont use anything in particular when cleaning the engine bay.
I had most of it apart during the turbo fitting etc, so just removed things, cleaned them up with WD40 etc, then either repainted, or cleaned up the parts before refitting! :)
I have also, replaced most of the nuts/bolts around the bay with Stainless Steel Allen bolts, which beleive me makes alot of difference.
The alloy parts, I just get repolished when they get dirty, as SPEC-R use the car for shows/promotion so they look after me that way :D
I just clean/dry under the bonnet everytime I wash the car, so keeps it clean that way.
(It's not easy to keep it that way, believe me! :? )

Best thing to use on them is a clean/new wet chamois leather.
Wipe it along the grain/polishing direction in the metal. On items that get hot, eg Header Tanks etc, leave them til they are cool, then wipe over.
If the water marks don't go, then you can use something like 'PEEK' metal polish gently, to polish out the marks.
Ps.. If you have any info/pics of your set-up now, could you mail them to me. I'd love to have a closer look.

Report back on the fitting of the 3" downpipe...............
Done a few miles now on it, and it Definitely Feels quicker now!! It does feel as if there was some kind of restriction there before, and it has now been released.. I know you may find it hard to believe, but honestly i think the car is quicker now.. We will see if it helped at the G-Force P1WOC RR day in Nov. ;) (I would love to give Mark a run for his money, but feel I may fall someway short!! :( )
Thought I might add some trivial things just keep up with the Jones's so to speak!!!........
Bought some JDM Electrically Folding Mirrors to fit, seeing as the car now resides in a garage. Usual story, garages built so small you can hardly fit the car in as it is, let alone put any other of the usual clutter that lives in peoples garages!! (See Marks thread for a good example!! :P)
Will post up some pics when I get round to fitting them
Also, bought some LED sidelight bulbs to try, which should smarten the look up at the front.
Toying with the idea of using some 100W Headlight bulbs in there too, although have been put off abit about the wiring not being upto it, and melting etc.....
Any thoughts??

im sure you have done the searches on SN pickle. i remember at least a couple of instances of the wires melting. if you are keen it may not be to much of a job to rewire back to the loom. depends how far you need to go back.
or try them with a lower rated fuse and see what happens :? . my garage is tidy now but still has 2 bikes in there. gonna sell them soon and then i will be after some JDM mirrors. where did you come across them?

James you'll have to change your turbo if you want to take on Mark I feel :D
Good news on the d/p, I know it was bugging you to change it.
Mirrors will be a simple swap over and save you getting out & folding them in yourself.
What do these LED sidelights look like? How bright are they? I wouldn't try using 100w builbs, they will melt the wiring harness. I had a set for a while then replaced it with a HID kit. Put the bulbs in my Mum's Honda & it melted the bulb holder, stay well clear :x

The LEDs are brilliant, but they do show up the headlights as being abit 'yellow' looking.
I would love to fit some HIDs really, but the cost, and the fact the car doesnt really see darkness too often are putting me off that idea!
Im sure I got some of the so-called phillips blue vision bulbs in there, and they're still crap!.
Mark, Mirrors where abit of a find!! ;) Didn't even need painting either :P Suprised how heavy they are though, I reckon that was the reason for taking them off the P1 in the first place??

reckon after the first WOT run it will be up at 50 plus degrees, and after that the soak etc will be to much for the fan to cope with to get it down to near ambient. the second run will probably be starting off at 30 degg and the job will be f*cked by then.

Right then.....
Fitted the mirrors this morning. I have taken a few photos of how it was done, but to be honest it was a piece of pi55 to do!!!
To start with, remove the door card from the doors. This is probably the hardest/trickiest part!!
Be careful not to break off any tabs etc.. Then remove the little triangle plastic cover that covers the mirror mounting area. You should be left with something like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00006.jpg
Unclip the wire harness that you can see in the pic. Then its just a case of removing the 3x screws that fix the mirror to the door. Shown here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00011.jpg
Remove mirror from car, and thread the new wire and mirror back into the correct place. Refit the 3x screws and plug harness back into the other half..
In this pic, you can see the extra 2pins in the plug that control the folding motor (the one on the right). (The P1 already has this wiring in the loom, so its just a case of plug in the new switch, and mirror and away you go!! )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00009.jpg
OE P1 mirror, and the JDM folding one side by side. (Folding one is on the Right as you look at it!!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00010.jpg
When assembled, they will fold in at the flick of a switch. (This is the replacement switch that you need. Not as nice to use as the OE, but oh well! )

I got the AutoLamps kit, its easy to install and was £300 IIRC. Had them for 3 years now & no problems. Only down side is the fog/spot lights stop working & these will need to be rewired if you want these to work :( Danny got a kit from Japan & that didn't interfer with his spot lights, will ask him for some more details.
Will stick up a pic with the new side lights to see how they all colour match

Yep, here are the pics. The HID's make the Philip's side lights look very yellow but the LEDs are great. I have 5100K, these are not as blue as 6000K but they have better luminance so the road is better lit up.

There is a big improvement over oem. H4 bulbs have been dropped for headlight for sometime now. All manufactures are going for 2 sets of lights, one dipped & one full beam as these are better. The kit i have is geared up for dipped and high beam is really only for flashing and doesn't really change the beam pattern much. That said the dipped are more than enough & now I have the driving light if the needs arises.

Right then, Finally got round to fitting the HID Headlight kit that I bought recently.
I had a little drama, with one of the bulbs being faulty, but got it all sorted now.
Before, I had a set of the Phillips Blue Vision bulbs, and TBH they weren't any better than the OE's. I hated the fact that they looked really yellow. The Sidelights they supplied were better, but then they made the headlights look even more yellow!! :( This was made worse by me buying a set of white LED sidelight bulbs.
I bought an HID Headlight kit, which uses Bi-Xenon bulbs, so that you get the Xenon on BOTH the Dipped and Main beam (most of the cheaper kits only have it on Dipped!)
Fitted this morning, and here are the results (apologise for the bad pics, but I took them in the garage this morning, whilst trying to make it dark in there!! )

cant you mod the last wheel nut somehow and make a tool for it (maybe drill a hole from side to side and press a bit of 5mm stainless bar through it so it protrudes a mm or so out of each side, then fettle a socket) so that you cant get it off with a normal socket.
the nuts look really good (tempted myself ) but let down badly by the odd one out

Only thing is, if someone spots there is no obvious Lock nut, they are gonna have a go at them, which could cause more damage than having 1x silver nut does?? :?

Well, after what can only be described as a brilliant day yesterday I can honestly say that I feel its all been worth it!! LOL
Had a brilliant day over @ G-Force in Aylesbury, as part of an immaculately organized P1WOC Rolling Road Day. Marky Mark was head organizer, and a massive thankyou goes to him, aswell as Bob Rawle for bringing along his Data Logging Equipment, and handing out advice to all.
Last but not least, Adam and the guys @ G-Force for a fantastic welcome, and for treating each car as if it were their own and taking care of them and us
Thanks too, to the Photographer from JTuner Magazine who was very friendly, and took some great photos during the day. (Looking forward to the issue in which we feature ;) )
Well, now I have blabbled on about it, I out to show you why I'm so happy
Basically, since the car was last on a Rolling Road, 23/04/2005 @ WRC Technologies
I have only changed 1x thing. I changed the Downpipe from a 3" tapering to 2 1/2" version, to a 3" all the way to end version.
I felt that this was an area of restriction with the old D/P, so it was changed to the latter meaning the Exhaust is now 3" all the way from the back of the turbo, to exit.
NO re-map was done to accomodate this, as its a fairly minor modification to the car in its current spec.
So, back to yesterday. I was turning up there with all intention of getting the car to run its Max boost target of 1.5bar on the rollers. Previously @ other RR days, it has only managed to run 1.2bar max.
With the figures that Mark gave G-Force from his GPS system, they were able to punch in the correct figures to calibrate the rollers to suit the P1 perfectly. (something that I am sure that the other RR's I have been to have not done??)
So, the car runs up, and hits pretty much the same boost as I get on the roads (was seeing 1.6bar on the way up there though!! )
Results..................................
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/GFPTo.jpg
395.5BHP and 332ft/lb TORQUE \:D/  8)
This equates to 300BHP @ the wheels.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/GFPPw.jpg
Car hit 1.5bar, and held 1.4bar Boost to the redline!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/GFPB.jpg
Compare that with the previous graph @ WRC Technologies, and its clear to see that the car wasn't run up properley @ WRC Tech at all!!
(NOTE 3rd gear used @ WRC)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/WRCgraph2.jpg
So, to conclude..... I am happy, the car seems happy, and a big thankyou must go out to Bob Rawle for the superb mapping. No other real thanks needed, as I did all the work myself!! :P  :P
Thanks for reading 8)

Wed 19-04-2006, 03:46 PM
Bob,
The gauge is for measuring the charge temperature, it is connected to a temp sensor that sits just before the throttle body. I'm sure Pickle has put up a pic showing its install, if not on this thread it will be on Marks. The gauge is from Nomad racing, comes complete with the sensor. Will need to enlarge the hole for it in the centre console, if you look at the second one Pickle is using you can see it slightly larger than the others.

Bob R: Yep, ready when you are ;)
Mark: The spiral wrap was there for before the Insulators were fitted, as the Return Water hose from the turbo touched the Plug leads, so put some of that on, and had some Neoprene type foam under the pipe to seperate it from the leads. (if you look at older pics, you will see that I also had some heat wrap around that hose too!! ;) ) Not really needed now, as there is a nice gap due to re-positioning.
Will remove it just for you! :P And Oh yes, I broke the Overflow 'nipple' from the Header Tank so had to get Mark to re-pair it with his super-duper pigeon sh*t welding!!! :P The extra hole is where I had to use my OE Header Tank in the meantime and it didn't fit the Induction stabiliser properly!! Its staying anyhow, as it 'lightens' the car a little with the extra hole! :P
Bash: I don't really know, and can't expect to put a finger on it as it has all been done over 4-5yrs. Can't put a price on the time I have spent on the car, and some of the parts were bought at bargain prices etc... Thanks for the comments though :)
Bob F: as Jazz says I just 'punched' out the blank in the dash surround. Moved the Bright switch over to that hole. Then you need to enlarge the hole you want to mount the Gauge in by quite abit!! Use a small file and keep checking til the gauge 'clicks' into place. ;)
Have got hold of another Original P1 centre section which has also been painted the same colour, to put in the car if plans change etc... ;)
Ps Jazz pull yer finger out and get yours sorted! :D
Apparently the problem I have with the car is a 'slight' drivability issue. Bob seems to think it could be an issue with the OE ECU trying to control the 740's on light throttle, as he had similar probs with another car running 740's on OE ECU. Also have read that 740's are not very nice when run at lowish Fuel Pressure, and I am running 3bar atmo with them. Had a pump play-up a while ago, so thought running the bigger injectors would ease the strain on the pump, as opposed to running 550's at higher Fuel Pressure!!
Seems it may have caused other issues?? Bob thinks he has a trick up his sleeve so we shall see ;)

Thought I'd just up-date the thread a little as a few things have been added/changed since.
Firstly, I have another set of wheels to fit to the car. Gone for something a 'little' different. Thery are a set of Rota Tarmac's, which are basically the same as the P1 wheels  but I have gone for the Bronze finish ;)
TBH they are Not as Bronze as I was hoping for, but nonetheless, they are different to the majority of colours/style that people seem to be fitting to the P1's. :P
Thats what I want, to have the car looking a little 'different' to the majority ;)
Not fitted to the car yet, hope to very soon, and will add a pic when I have done so. They are all ready to go with new tyres etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00001-1.jpg
Also, thanks to Mark I now have one of his shiny metal plates to fix my spare P1 Plaque under the bonnet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00003-1.jpg
He also made up some Tuffnol Header Tank Insulators for me, which he kindly milled down to suit my layout. ;) Thanks Mate.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/HeaderInsulator1.jpg
Also, a Big Thanks must go to Bob Rawle for the loan of his Version 4 Forge Dumpvalve, to help me cure a niggling problem that has bugged the car for some time now!! When easing off throttle from positive (say 1/2bar) boost, the car would 'Jerk' quite violently, making for an unpleasant ride sometimes for passengers. :(
This was put down to the standard Dumpvalve being abit too 'soft' and releasing built up boost pressure abit soon back into the turbo system!. So, Bob loaned me his ver4 Re-circ DV which I duly plumbed into the car to suit. With a little experimentation of shims and springs, I now have eradicated the problem almost entirely!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v327/P14KLE/DSC00006-1.jpg
All in all, very happy with the car as it stands now. 8)
Keep your eyes peeled for a future feature on the car soon in a certain tuning mag ;)

Still gonna reserve judgement on the wheels till they are on! did you get the caps sorted in the end?
No worries with the bits and bobs.
What tuning mags that then? Gay piano players monthly?

Nice one James, glad to hear you've sorted out your jerking problem.
First time I've seen bronze, like to see how they look once on the car. Weren't you tempted to do the magazine shoot with them?

Gonna try with no caps to start with, but I have bought some colour coded ones from RareRims for next to nothing!! ;)
Trust me, they will look 8), and at least they will be different to the OE, and the PFF's that everyone is fitting these days
Jazz, Mag feature was about P1's so I thought it best to keep OE's on for recognition of the type of car it is ;)
Hopefully get the wheels on this week so pic will be up soon. In dark light they look similar to the OE Anthracite, but in bright sunshine, the Bronze really 'pops' out into view. :)
Rich, only engine and drivetrain realistically, but I will leave that down to people such as yourself etc, as I really don't have the funds to allow for any 'playing' in that area ;)

Pickle - Stunnight engine bay nothing like a tip top engine bay makes a car so much more impressive!!
Thinking about doing similar stuff with ours, we used to have a GTR Skyline and painted all the HKS pips gold there should be some pics of it on here somewhere that Andy posted. I have to say I really adored working on the engine bay of the Skyline as it was a lot less fiddley than the p1 and was easy to make it look good there was alot more I had planned to do but didnt get chance before we sold it to make way for the p1.
By they way who painted you calipers as I noticed you got the subaru detailing painted on ther also. We have just painted ours a couple of weeks back and was considering detialing the subaru name but was concered I would make a mess of it so was just wondering if you did yours yourself and how?

hi, thanks for the nice comments! ;)
I painted the calipers themselves, then left to dry. Then I used a nice flat piece of wood (small bit of 2x4 works well  )
Paint the piece of wood on the flat side the colour you want use, and press it against the SUBARU lettering!!
Ta Dah!! :) You then have the perfect outline to fill in the lettering neatly with a small ART type brush ;)
Easy peasy :)

OK. Pic of wheels on. Please excuse the 4x4 wheelarch gap, as I had only just let it down off the jack, so suspension hadn't settled.
I think they look 8) especially in the sunshine of today

look nice but i reckon they look far better in person with the bronze tint.
i think it would have been a mistake to go too far from the oe wheel style.
i think the oz alloys suit the p1 perfectly but they are alittle commen on the forum.good choice.

problem is that prodrive have probably found one of the best looking wheels for any subaru but with the sonic blue and anthracite it just looks right plus any other wheel on a p1 looks too different.

This what I will be more used to seeing!! This is a pic on a slightly overcast day, and not in direct sunlight!!
The 'duller' Bronze is more what I was looking for. Just enough to look different from the normal Anthracite.
Bonus is, they are actually lighter than the O.Z's!!! Not weighed them, but can definitely notice the difference when you pick them up.
J, you are dead right there, I think only the WR1 type wheels (in Dark colour) look as good on a P1, but then that's been done before by a few members on here etc... ;) :P

agree pickle, the wr1 wheel does look good but alot of them about now.
its probably a case of seeing all the p1`s with the wrc1 wheel that anything different just looks odd.given time i reckon these wheels may end up looking as good if not better.the bronze with sonic blue should go well together.

Well, the car has been featured in a magazine, which is a first for me!!
I have always wanted to get a car featured in print, there's something about it which helps to recognize seeing the hard work pay off!!
Both Marky Mark and I got a 6 page feature in Issue 68 (Sept 06) of Japanese Performance magazine  8)
There are some pics of the photoshoot below if you are not a reader of the mag.
Big thankyou to Mark for this ;) made me a very happy/proud little boy!! LOL

Spot on mate.
Been said many a time on here, but two stunning looking cars. and your right about being featured, had a cossie featured in fast ford a few years back and is a great feeling.
Cars are a credit to you both and the time you have spent on them. Well done.
Look forward to the issue to read the feature.

Yep, in the shops today. Just picked mine up :D
Im glad Pickle put them pics up, cos they blow my PC up every time i open them.
One thing i will say about the pics - The shine thhat was apparent on the cars on the day has not come across as well as i had hoped. They really did look together. What weas nice was Phil Royle commented to to us both how clean shiny and well presented the cars were on the day and it was a long time since he had photographed such well represented cars 8)
Fair play to Pickle, he had a 100 mile drive up to my place the day before and just a wash and wax when he got here wheras i had my car off the road for a week and was a total gay boy with it!
As always James your car looks superb in the pics 8)

Thanks peeps!
As mark said, the shine on the 2x cars on the day was awesome, it was a nice bright sunny day, and in the 'flesh' they looked very 8) together I must say.
Phil's comments on them being 'minters' was nice to hear as you say Mark. I for one have sometimes been rather disappointed when i have seen Mag featured cars for real at shows etc..
ALOT of them are quite rough round the edges when seen in the flesh.
Must just say, the car looks abit different than that currently, as I have the Bronze Rota's fitted still
Ps Kev, I must shamefully admit to having one of the pics in A4 size hanging from my wall!
Might get in touch in the future though ;)
